The Midwest has such a rich history of craft, and the people I encounter at fairs have a real appreciation for handwork, beauty and ingenuity. Renegade was started in Chicago and Chicago is the home of the Renegade store and gallery. There's a lot of terrific artists and craftspeople working in Chicago. I'm no expert on the region and can't comment on how the mood compares to 17 years ago, but I think the current arts and crafts scene in Chicago is impressive by most standards-- and is certainly appealing and welcoming to visitors like me.
